Talk:Surferpedia

From Surferpedia - The Wiki Encyclopedia of Surfing

Jump to: navigation, search

Surferpedia is a collaborative project, so its integrity depends on communication between the parties and respect for each other's point of view. To facilitate this process, each page has a separate discussion page, which can be used to resolve disputes.

Since content can be posted and edited by anyone, Surferpedia is prone to vandalism. However, attacks are easily rectified, by reverting the effected page to its prior version, and the culprits can be blocked.

Hopefully, Surferpedia will attract a community of surf writers who can cover all aspects of surf culture and do so in a dignified fashion. Of course, it is distressing to have people tamper with your work. However, you can always challenge their input on the article's Discussion page (and reprimand them for not discussing their concerns first) or simply revert to the prior version.

[edit] To promote . . . or demote

Surferpedia is an encyclopedia of surfing that allows anyone to supplement the commercial depiction of surf culture. It therefore empowers surfers who wish to challenge the way commercial interests distort the message for mass appeal. However, it is also inherently subversive, because it necessarily promotes topics based on categorisation, instead of commercialisation.

[edit] Textual analysis

"Try to locate the places in the text that seem to you to be in some way its centers of gravity, places where something happens which focuses the text and moves it in some particular direction. Then think about questions you have which the text does not answer - what do you still need or want to know? Finally, given what you understand of the writer's intentions for the piece, what suggestions would you give the writer for improving this piece?"
